July 2012 Update

Greetings in Christ,

Whew, the heat is on!  We are once again entering the hot season, which means no rain for about 4 months.  Here in Manaus, they have two seasons, hot with rain(Nov-Apr), and just plain hot(June-Oct) which is now.  There is something different about the heat here in Manaus, than what it is in the States.  Here, there seems to be more pressure or something in the air, which makes the heat seem a lot more than what it is elsewhere.

We have had the pleasure in the last month to be hospitable to a young short term missionary from New York, her name is Sabrina.  She has been like a glass of cool water for Melissa as she has poured herself into being a companion of Melissa, helping around the house and with the babies, Benjamin and Veronica.  God bless her, and please pray for her as she is soon returning to the States.

We have much on the agenda in the coming month.  The biggest item is the trip we are planning for visiting the Apurina Tribe.  I will take Andrea and Sabrina for a one week journey to visit, encourage, and deliver Biblical teaching supplies to the Apurina.  We hope that this trip is the first of many, as I would like to visit every 3 month from now on.  I don’t know why, but the Giligan’s Island theme music is playing in my head right now, “A Three Hour Tour……..!”  Let’s pray that the trip goes without troubles.  Of course, we trust that we are more than victorious in Christ Jesus and that our God is capable to do more than we can even imagine or perceive as His will is being accomplished here in the Amazon Jungle.

2Ti 2:4  No man that goes to war, entangles himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

Living here is very different than living in Kansas or California.  We thought when we moved from Kansas to California that we would never get used to the cultural changes; many new and different people groups, faster pace, higher costs, language barriers, etc.  But moving from there to Manaus was similar to taking the differences between Kansas and California and multiplying them to the 10th power exponential.

The first six months was very different, but we did not understand anything, and we were suffering from shock, cultural shock!  We stayed in the house when we did not have specific business to accomplish.  Melissa was home schooling the children and caring for two little ones. We were having 10hrs of Portuguese lessons per/wk.   I would not have any of you ignorant though of the many trials and troubles we have gone through in the last year.  The last three months have been the hardest times we have ever gone through as a family.  These things have threatened to tear our family apart.  Thank you for your prayers and comments on Facebook about these issues as we posted them.  But, glory be to God, who is stronger than all our troubles, we keep our eyes upon him and we press on through the heartaches and troubles, ever reaching the upward calling of God found in Christ Jesus!

Philipians 3:13-14  Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
