And Cain said, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Genesis 4:9
And then the lawyer, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:29
The Apurinã people are learning the answers to these questions! And we, having come from a distant land, are showing that we are also their neighbors, no matter how great the distance is between us.
We are bringing the good news of Jesus Christ. And the people have responded!
When we first arrived in the village 2 years ago, our Church services were averaging 6-12 people. On our last trip, October 2013, we held 5 Bible studies in the book of Genesis, 3 Sunday services, 1 communion service, and 3 leadership classes. We averaged 35-40 people in each service with 49 attending the last service the night before we left. The village, “Terra Nova”, has approximately 120 people, with about 25 Christians.
We have been “called” by God and “sent” out to the uttermost parts of the earth, to show the love of God to our neighbors! Jesus said,
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:35
We do have time to relax once in awhile. Go to the above link to see pictures from the various waterfalls in this region. We visited this ecological reserve with a short term mission family that stayed with us in August. We saw all kinds of animals and fish, three different snakes, a huge tree frog and some macaws. We snorkeled and went hiking, relaxed on the water’s edge, and fellow shipped throughout the day. It was very nice. I was a little nervous when I saw Andrea and Josiah on top of this 20 foot waterfall, but snapped a quick picture before asking them to step back from the edge.
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1Thessolonians 5:18
Melissa continues to have the most “on her plate.” She is now teaching 3 times a week, Monday at the Church, Wednesday at ITV, and Thursday at our house. She also cares for us, cooking most of the meals, cleaning the house, and keeping up with the laundry. Every meal is prepared from scratch and there are no laundry dryers. We must hang up all of our clothes to dry in the most humid climate on the earth. We recently hired some help, Mazarela, who is a daughter of one of the local tribal chiefs. We bring her to the house on Tuesdays and Fridays to help out. She loves the Lord also! Praise God for all of His providential care in each of the circumstances of our lives!
Josiah continues to grow like a weed. He likes to climb any tree available, throw any ball, rock, or stick he can find, and study his history at school. (NOT! :D) Veronica continues to be cute. She cannot help it. She likes playdough, dollies, and new clothes. Benjamin will do whatever the others are doing, playdough, climbing trees, rummaging through Andrea’s room, etc.
Andrea is now teaching English in her spare time. This provides a constant supply of “mall” money for her. She teaches two children in their house two days a week. She also sings in the Church choir. She is now a Jr in High School. Her studies are coming along quite well. She says “Hello” to all of her friends and invites them to come visit.
Junior is now in College! He is studying at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Ks. He was placed by the administrators in a dorm room with 3 Brasilians who had won scholarships to play soccer. He is doing alright, but asks that you would pray for him as he is struggling with reverse culture shock.
Brad has started teaching and preaching in the various Churches in and around Manaus. This does keep him busy when he is not in the village.
It is so beautiful along the Amazon River. We would like you to come visit us. Mark your calendar and set a date. Come and see what the Lord is doing! It is that easy. You won’t be disappointed. Contact us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org God bless you!
Please continue to pray for the Street Ministry.Keep praying for ITV. Pray as we are now visiting people in their homes. The families there appreciate your love.
We are always in need of more support. Please consider a partnership with us. Here is our contact information. God bless you.
